Circadian Rhythms: An Electric Jolt to the Clock
The animal circadian pacemaker is composed of two transcriptional feedback loops, which regulate electrical activity in circadian neurons. Surprisingly, a new study reports that electrical activity can reprogram circadian transcription, and identifies CREB proteins as candidates for this reprograming.
متن کاملCircadian rhythms: Eyes of the clock
The daily light-dark cycle synchronizes the internal circadian clock with the outside world. Blind organisms maintain this light-induced entrainment, suggesting the existence of a non-visual phototransduction pathway. The photoreceptor is unknown, but several intriguing candidates have recently come to light.
متن کاملCircadian Rhythms: Hijacking the Cyanobacterial Clock
Using basic research to advance a practical application, a recent study demonstrates that the circadian clock in cyanobacteria can be 'reprogrammed' to improve yields of heterologous protein production - a green future surely beckons.
متن کاملCircadian rhythms: Mop up the clock!
All circadian clock genes discovered in Drosophila have mammalian counterparts with extensive sequence homology. Similarities and differences have been identified between insect and mammalian oscillators. Recent studies have shed new light on two mammalian clock components: Mop3 and Per2.
متن کاملCircadian Rhythms: Per2bations in the Liver Clock
A master circadian clock resides in the brain and is required to synchronize the clocks in peripheral tissues such as the liver. Until now, it has been unclear how the central clock synchronizes the peripheral ones. New work points to one of the core clock genes, mPer2, as an essential link in this chain.
